Description
Nos 1 and 2 Higher Street are a pair of cottages, likely built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from Ham stone that is cut and squared, with ashlar dressings and an ashlar north elevation for No. 1. The cottages feature Welsh slate roofs with stepped coped gables and stone and brick chimney stacks. They are two-storeys high with attics, and the ridges of the roofs are oriented at right angles to the road, creating two single-bay gables facing Higher Street.
Each cottage has a 16-pane sash window in a plain opening on the right side of the ground floor, with doorways in deep plain recesses to the left. On the first floors and attic of No. 2, there are plain mullioned windows with slight chamfers; the first-floor window of No. 2 is a 3-light window, while the others are 2-light. There is a small casement window in the attic of No. 1. The north elevation of No. 1 features a band course between the floors and pairs of 2-light small-pane casements at each level, set in slightly segmental-arched openings. There are 20th-century extensions to the south of No. 2. The interiors have not been seen.
