Description
Nos. 15 and 17 are a pair of estate cottages built in 1913 for the Duchy of Cornwall. They feature a façade made of ham stone ashlar, with cut and squared stone on the sides and rear, and a Welsh slate roof that has simple overhung gables. The cottages have brick chimney stacks at the ends and in the center.
The buildings are two storeys high and consist of four bays. They have ovolo-mould mullioned windows set in wave-mould recesses, with three-light windows above and four-light windows below, all fitted with horizontal-bar casement inserts. Between the first and second bays, and the third and fourth bays, there are chamfered cambered-arched doorways topped with plain fanlights. A continuous label or string mould runs across the ground floor openings. High up between the second and third bays, there is a rectangular plaque featuring the Prince of Wales' feathers and the date 1913, which is also seen on the rainwater stackheads. An ornamental gable vent is located in the south wall.
The interiors have not been seen. Approximately four meters from the cottages is an ashlar boundary wall with a slight plinth and simple coping, featuring a shared plain opening in the center without gates. This boundary wall contributes to the setting of the houses and the overall streetscape. These well-detailed cottages are designed to harmonize with the surrounding buildings, contrasting with the estate's houses at Nos. 3-9 East Stoke.
