Description

The Old Mill at Mill Farm is a water grist mill, rebuilt around the mid-18th century from an earlier structure. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble and partly weatherboarded, topped with a corrugated sheet steel roof featuring gabled ends. Originally, there were two mills situated on either bank of the mill stream, with two water-wheels positioned between them. The mid-18th century rebuilding transformed it into a single four-bay range over the mill stream.

The building has one and two storeys, with the roof extending over the gap at the center where the stream runs. There is an unglazed wooden mullion window at the north end. Although the interior was not inspected, historical documents indicate that the north mill is single-storeyed and features a wooden hurst frame that supports a single bedstone, along with a wooden wheelshaft and wooden arms of the pit-wheel, making it a rare example of a single-step drive mill. The south mill is two storeys with two bays and contains mid-18th century wooden machinery of a two-step drive type, which includes an upright shaft powering two pairs of millstones and wooden crown-wheels. The lower millstones are complete with spindles and wooden stone nuts. In the mid-19th century, the pit-wheel and wallower were replaced with iron. The roof trusses date from the mid-18th century and include collars, trenched purlins, studs, and weatherboarding for partitioning. The Old Mill spans a millstream on the River Brue.
