Description
This is a late 18th century milestone located in front of 161 Congleton Road, erected by the Tunstall and Bosley Turnpike Trust. The milestone is triangular in shape and carved from local gritstone, likely sourced from the Bridestone quarry. It is positioned on the pavement side of the front boundary wall. The milestone features notched shoulders, and its road-facing side is chamfered to create two gently angled faces. The inscription on both faces is very worn, but it is believed to read, "TO/ CONGLETON/ 3 1/2 MILES/ TO/ MACCLESFIELD/ 11 MILES/ TO/ NEWCASTLE/ 9 MILES."
