Description
The milestone opposite Number 66 (The Mile House) is a late 18th-century triangular-sectioned, whitewashed buff sandstone block with a shaped top. It features a black-painted inscription on the north face that reads "To Macclesfield 1 Mile" and on the south face "To Chapel 10 Miles, Sheffield 32 Miles, Chesterfield." The distance is now obscured by the pavement. Similar milestones can be found along the former Macclesfield to Chapel-en-le-Frith turnpike of 1770 in locations such as Rainow, Kettleshulme, and Lyme Handley.
