SJ 97 NE RAINOW C. P . WHALEY BRIDGE ROAD (East Side) 3/164 Milestone at SJ 9737 7850 II

Milestone: c.1770. Triangular sectioned ashlar sandstone block with shaped top. Painted white, the inscriptions are picked out in black and on north face read "To Macclesfield 5M" and south face reads "To Chapel 6M, Sheffield 28M, Chesterfield 29M". One of a complete set on the Macclesfield-Whaley Bridge turnpike of 1770. This one has been moved onto the modern road side from the old turnpike which runs west of Harrop House Farm.
