Description
This milestone, dating from around 1770, is a triangular sectioned block made of ashlar sandstone with a shaped top. It is painted white, with black inscriptions. The north face reads "To Macclesfield 5M," while the south face states "To Chapel 6M, Sheffield 28M, Chesterfield 29M." It is part of a complete set along the Macclesfield-Whaley Bridge turnpike established in 1770. This particular milestone has been relocated to the modern roadside from its original position on the old turnpike, which is located west of Harrop House Farm.
