Description

Charles Head House is a small manor house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations made in 1764. It is constructed from coursed squared buff sandstone rubble, featuring pink sandstone quoins. The roof is made of Kerridge stone-slate, with a stone ridge and three stone chimneys.

The house has a rectangular lobby-entry design and is two stories tall with a four-bay front. The windows are three-light, tall, and have square-sectioned stone mullions, although one has been altered. On the left side, there is a gabled porch with an ashlar front, which has the initials RP (for Robert Pott) and the date 1764 carved above it. Behind the porch is the original chamfered doorcase with a four-board door. Each side of the house features a rebated two-light chamfered stone mullion. Extensions at the rear connect the house to a farmhouse.

Inside, the house has lost its oak baffle but retains exposed ceiling beams. The windows have chamfered mullions behind mid-18th century panelled window seats and recessed shutters with raised fields. The fireplace is made of grey sandstone with beaded edges and a reeded mantelpiece, along with a good iron range. There are two six-panelled doors with raised fields. The room to the right includes a panelled window seat and cupboards with ogee-handed panels in the chimney breast. At the rear, there is a dogleg staircase featuring turned column balusters, a moulded handrail, and beaded square revels, along with panelling under the stairs. Upstairs, there are two two-panelled doors and several three and four-board doors.
