Description
Summerclose Farmhouse and the attached barn date from 1755. The farmhouse is built from washed coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and two stone chimneys. It is two stories high with a three-bay front. The left end bay has a four-light chamfered stone-mullion window, while the right end bay has a similar three-light window. The central bay contains a board door beneath a rough stone lintel, with a date plaque above reading "JAB" (for John Brocklehurst) and the year 1755. At the rear, there is a continuous outshut. Inside, there are rooms on either side of a central former passage, with a crude wooden spiral staircase located in the outshut. The ceilings have chamfered beams with flat stops. In the parlour, there are fixed cupboards with re-used 17th-century panelling for doors and a three-board door with iron-strap hinges.
To the left is the corn barn, which dates from the mid-18th century. The roof has been raised, and outshuts were added in the early 20th century. The barn features a central cart entrance with a wooden lintel and a projecting rubble band above, as well as a line of ventilation slots on the sides and later rectangular openings. The interior has roof trusses made of tiebeam and collar, one of which includes short diagonal struts.
This building is a complete example of an 18th-century plan that incorporates 17th-century style features, remaining in use as late as 1755. It can be compared to Lima Farmhouse and Lowerbrook Farmhouse in Rainow.
