Milestone at SJ 9657 7738

Milestone: late C18. Triangular sectioned ashlar sandstone block with shaped top. Painted white, the inscriptions are picked out in black and on north face read "To Macclesfield 4M" and south face reads "To Chapel 7M, Sheffield 29M, Chesterfield 30M".

One of a set on the Macclesfield-Whaley Bridge turnpike of 1770. Others in Hurdsfield, Rainow (3), Kettleshulme (q.v.).
