Description

This milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is a triangular sectioned block made of ashlar sandstone with a shaped top. It is painted white, with black inscriptions. On the north face, it reads "To Macclesfield 4M," while the south face displays "To Chapel 7M, Sheffield 29M, Chesterfield 30M." This milestone is part of a set along the Macclesfield-Whaley Bridge turnpike established in 1770, with additional examples found in Hurdsfield, Rainow (three), and Kettleshulme.
