Description
The corn barn, shippon, and pigcote at Lower House Farm date back to 1697, with additional structures added in the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and feature a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge. The corn barn has a three-bay facade facing the road, which includes a five-board door with iron strap hinges and a lintel carved with "ML" for Lowe, dated 1697. This door is flanked by square pitch-holes. The west front features a partial outshut and a cart entrance beneath a wooden lintel.
Inside the corn barn, there are two roof trusses made of tiebeams, queen posts, and collars, with overlapping purlins and a ridge. The shippon forms the north range of the courtyard, with its west gable showcasing three doors with ashlar surrounds. The central door leads to a feeding passage, with shippons on either side. Above these doors are two loading bays, and the south side has windows below, with square pitch-holes above. The shippon is connected by steps and walls to a pigcote that has two entrances and a seed store above.
Please note that the cottage located at the north-east corner of this group is not included in this listing.
