Description

Lowerbrook Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble, with some Kerridge stone-slate and Welsh slate roofing. A long central chimney runs along the ridge. The farmhouse has a square plan and a symmetrical west front with three bays. The end bays feature 3-light wooden casements on the first two floors, and a 3-light chamfered stone mullion window in the half-story, with leaded lights. A semi-circular rubble arched doorcase is located centrally. The rear elevation has similar mullioned windows in the half-story, and a taller 3 and 4-light weakly chamfered stone mullion windows on the ground storey. Inside, a central passage divides the farmhouse into pairs of rooms, each with fireplaces in the partition walls. A dogleg staircase with a moulded handrail and turned column balusters ascends over two flights. Original features include 2-panelled doors with raised fields, wooden handles and latches, a 4-board door with iron-strap hinges, and some exposed sawn chamfered and stopped ceiling beams. A brick oven remains within one chimney breast. It is an unusual plan for the area, representing a double-pile layout with a central stack.
