Description

The Old Hall is a former farmhouse, now a house, that dates back to the early 17th century, with an addition from 1690 and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge and three stone chimneys. The building has a T-shaped plan and is two stories high with a three-bay south front. There is a blocked door in the right end bay, which is topped with a hood mould. The other bays have 20th-century windows, also under hood moulds. The right gable end displays four two-light chamfered stone mullions beneath hood moulds, while the left gable end has one similar three-light, three two-light, and two one-light windows.

At the rear, there is a wing with a two-storey, three-bay east front. The left end bay features a heavy door lintel carved with "FES" (for Francis Stevenson) and the date 1690. Above this, there is a two-light stone mullion and a small leaded light in the attic. The central bay has three-light stone mullions, and the right end bay has two-light stone mullions. A good rainhead is a 1930 copy of the original, although some original decorated lead guttering remains.

Inside, the building has timber-framed partition walls and a dogleg staircase from the 17th century, which has shaped and pierced flat balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels. Most doors are six-panelled with reeded rails, turned handles, and wooden latches. The roof structure consists of two trusses with tiebeams, two diagonal struts, and a collar. There are also two stop-chamfered beams in the main room with plain stops.

The continuation of the wing towards the road was rebuilt in 1975 and is not included in the listing. The Old Hall was formerly known as Sugar Lane Farmhouse.
