Description

Hough Hole House is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in 1796 and further changes around 1980. The building is constructed from coursed, squared, buff sandstone rubble and features a concrete tile roof with two stone chimneys. It is 2.5 storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-bay front. The end bays have 20th-century three-light wooden casements set under rough stone lintels. The central entrance features a six-panelled door with a two-light casement above it, and a date tablet reading JMM (for James Mellor) from 1796.

Inside, there is a central passageway. To the right, a room contains an ashlar grey sandstone fire surround with dentilations beneath the mantel shelf, along with a good late 18th-century iron range that has the Prince of Wales's feathers on the oven doors. The room to the left features a grey sandstone fireplace with reeded columns and rosettes in the corners, as well as a contemporary cast-iron grate with half columns and foliage panels. The building has stop-chamfered beams with flat stops. The bedrooms include one late 18th-century cast-iron grate and one Victorian grate. Much of the roof structure remains intact.

Hough Hole House is attached to a converted mill, which is not included in this listing.
