Description
The pedestal tomb of James Walker, dated 1843, is located in the gardens of Hough Hole House. It is made of square buff sandstone and sits on a moulded plinth featuring inscribed raised panels. The tomb has a projecting cross-gabled capstone, which is adorned with carvings in the pediments and supports an urn surrounded by a border of acanthus leaves.
This tomb is the most westerly of a group of three pedestal tombs in the garden. While all three are of a standard Victorian design, the inscriptions are by James Mellor junior, many of which are lengthy and reflect the influence of the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg on the Walker family. The tomb is listed for its group value only.
