Description
The Rainow War Memorial Cross and Seat is located in a small garden on the south side of Tower Hill, opposite the Grade II-listed Tower Hill Farm buildings. The memorial cross, made of Kerridge stone, stands approximately 6 meters tall and features a small wheel-head cross atop a tapered octagonal shaft. The shaft has a moulded and decorated foot that rests on a tapering pedestal, which is set on a two-stage base that sits on a low step.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front of the pedestal reads, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF RAINOW WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on the other sides of the pedestal.
Behind the memorial cross, in the rear of the garden, is a substantial seat also made of Kerridge stone. This seat consists of a rectangular bay of coursed stone walling, with internal stone benching along the rear and sides. The bay wall is modulated from the center and capped. A stone plaque embedded in the rear wall commemorates the Second World War, stating, "IN PROUD & HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF RAINOW WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 45" followed by seven names.
