Description
Holly Tree Cottage and Tower Hill House are two houses that were formerly a house and stables. The core of the building dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century and the 20th century. The structure is made of coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and four stone chimneys. It has an L-shaped plan with an added range and is two stories tall with a three-bay south front. The left two bays have rubble hood moulds over a three-light stone mullion and three openings that have been altered in the 20th century. The west front displays heavy roof timbers in the gable and a primitive architrave over a six-panelled door leading to Tower Hill House. The projecting part at the left end has two, two-light chamfered stone mullions for the cellar and two windows at the rear. There is also a reported window with horn used as glazing.
Inside, Holly Tree Cottage features timber-framed partition walls and heavy ceiling beams. Tower Hill House has late 18th-century six-panelled doors, moulded panels in the window reveals, and two pine panelled cupboards in the chimney breast. There is a dogleg painted mahogany staircase with square balusters under a moulded elliptical opening with panelled soffits. The kitchen includes two chamfered beams with flat stops.
