Description

This milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is a triangular-sectioned sandstone block with a shaped top. It is painted white with black lettering. The inscription on the north-east face reads "To Macclesfield 3M", while the west face states "To Chapel 8M, To Sheffield 30M, To Chesterfield 31M". This milestone is part of a set located along the Macclesfield-Chapel turnpike, established in 1770, with other examples still existing in Hurdsfield, Rainow (three), and Kettleshulme.
