2/139 Milestone at SJ -9456 7522

Milestone: late C18. Triangular-sectioned ashlar sandstone block with shaped top. Painted white with black-painted inscription reading on south-west face "To Chapel 9M, Sheffield 31M, Chesterfield 32M" and on north-east face "To Macclesfield 2M".

Other examples of this type occur in Hurdsfield, Rainow (3), and Kettleshulme (q.v.) and in Lyme Handley, on the turnpike from Macclesfield to Chapel-en-le-Frith, this section built 1770.
