Description
The milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is a triangular-sectioned block made of ashlar sandstone with a shaped top. It is painted white and features a black-painted inscription on the south-west face that reads "To Chapel 9M, Sheffield 31M, Chesterfield 32M," and on the north-east face, it reads "To Macclesfield 2M." Similar milestones can be found in Hurdsfield, Rainow (three examples), Kettleshulme, and Lyme Handley, along the turnpike from Macclesfield to Chapel-en-le-Frith, which was constructed in 1770.
