Description
Saltersford Hall and attached farm buildings are a farmhouse and farm structures dated 1593, although the larger part seems to be from the late 17th century with 19th-century alterations. The buildings are made of partly rendered coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and blocks, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, featuring a stone ridge and two stone chimneys along with one brick chimney.
The farmhouse is L-shaped and has a two-storey, three-bay west front, with the left two bays under a gable. The left end bay features a 9-pane fixed window. The central doorway has a low segmentally arched head with a moulded triangular pediment above, which contains the initials HF. To the right of the doorway is a date stone and another door with a 2-light casement above it. The remaining windows are from the 19th or 20th century. Inside, some exposed beams are visible, although the interior has not been fully inspected.
The farm buildings form a south range that includes a shippon and hay loft attached to the house, as well as a corn barn and another shippon to the west. The openings in these structures feature long and short quoining, with a mix of stone and wooden lintels. Inside, some original tie beam and collar trusses can be seen.
This site is notable for its unusual survival of a Renaissance classical detail on a vernacular building in the area. The original house built in 1593 was constructed by the Stopford family of Bate Hall, Macclesfield.
