Description
The Wayside Shrine, located at Hartington Upper Quarter, is a late 19th-century structure built of coursed squared rubble gritstone. It features a stone slated roof with a lead apex apron and a cross finial. The small circular building rises from a plain plinth and has a single doorway without joinery, framed with a plain pegged frame beneath a sturdy timber lintel. To the right of the entry, there is a simple breather lancet. The conical roof structure has stone slates that overhang the wall head to direct rainwater away.
Inside, there is a decorative tile panel against the wall, made up of twelve tiles painted to depict St Joseph and the infant Jesus. This panel is set in a plain stone frame and is surrounded by a stone tablet inscribed with letters and the date 1889. The shrine is believed to have been erected in memory of a Spanish governess who lived at Errwood Hall, located to the south of the shrine.
