Description
The Great Wall of China is an ornamental garden building located in the Chinese Garden at Biddulph Grange, constructed between 1848 and 1860 by John Bateman. It features ornamental garden walls with two gateways, made from random coursed stone that is finished to look ruinous. The two walls are approximately 5 meters apart and 2.5 meters high, both built into an artificial bank to the east. The north wall has two round-arch entries, with the lower entry leading to a pathway and corbelled stonework over the arch. The south entrance features a single round arch. This structure is part of the Chinese Garden's pathway and is set against a perimeter bank made of massive imported local boulders.
