Description

The war memorial in St Lawrence's Churchyard, Biddulph, is a First World War memorial erected in 1921. It is situated to the north of the Church of St Lawrence, which is also a Grade II*-listed building, alongside several other Grade II-listed memorials in the churchyard.

This memorial is made of Cornish granite and features a Celtic wheel-head cross with a knot work design carved in relief on each arm and a round emboss in the center. The wheel includes trefoil tracery between the cross arms. The cross-head is set atop a tapering shaft with a moulded foot, which rises from a two-tier, tapering plinth. Both tiers of the plinth are four-sided, with the lower tier being slightly wider than the upper. The entire structure rests on a regular-coursed, two-stepped stone base, with small square stones at each corner of the lower step. All inscriptions and names are presented in raised leaded lettering.

The main inscription is located on the front (west) face of the upper tier of the plinth, which reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE BIDDULPH MEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ AUG. 1914 – NOV. 1918/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." A further inscription on the rear (east) face states: "THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE." The names of those who died are inscribed on all four faces of the lower tier of the plinth.
