Description
Biddulph War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with later additions for subsequent conflicts. It is situated at the junction of Congleton Road and John Street in the center of the town.
The memorial features a limestone sculpture of a soldier leaning on a reversed rifle, with a jagged piece of rock carved behind him. The rest of the structure is made of granite. The soldier stands on a splayed base that sits atop a square plinth, which has a cushion-cap and splayed foot. The entire memorial rises from a chamfered block base. Two additional granite plaques are affixed at an angle to the base on the north-east and south-west sides.
The plinth and the additional plaques display inscriptions and names in incised lettering, which is painted gold. The main inscription on the north-east face reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." Another inscription, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," is incised on the foot of the plinth. A total of 73 names related to those who died in the First World War are listed beneath the principal inscription and on the remaining three sides of the plinth. The angled plaques also include names of those who died in the First World War and later conflicts, with the north-east plaque inscribed with "1939-1945 (39 NAMES)" and the south-west plaque inscribed with "1914-18 (9 NAMES) 1939-1945 (10 NAMES) 2007 (NAME)."
The memorial is surrounded by decorative metal railings.
