Description

Whitehouse Cottage is a cottage that dates from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and the 20th century. It features a timber frame built on a sandstone plinth, with wattle and daub and painted brick infill, and is topped with a Norfolk reed roof. The cottage is single storey with an attic and has a three-framed-bay front that includes four windows. The windows are 20th-century casement types, and there are two dormers with thatch, located over the first floor left and centre bays. The framing is square-panel style, and the right-hand bay has a higher wall plate, while the plinth steps down to the left of the centre bay, which was formerly the entrance.

Inside, the cottage has three cruck truss frames with slightly curved blades, although the apices are not visible. The centre bay features a large firehood and an ovolo-moulded spine beam. There are steps down to the left bay, which has a plain chamfered beam ceiling, and straight windbraces in the roof construction. The cottage has evolved from an open hall and downhouse, with a 17th-century bay originally ceiled added to the right, along with 20th-century additions to the sides and rear.
