Description
The Manor House is an 18th-century detached house located on the north-west side of Higher Street in Merriott. It is built of Ham stone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, featuring coped gables, obelisks over kneelers, a ball finial to the east gable, and ashlar chimney stacks. The house follows an "L" shape and has two storeys and four bays, with bay four set back slightly. Architectural details include a plinth, cornice, plain parapet, and rusticated quoins. The first floor has 20-pane sash windows in architraves. The ground floor features 16-pane sash windows in bays one and three, French doors in bay four, and a 20th-century glazed floor with a surround of fluted Doric pilasters and a full entablature with a flat stone hood in bay two. A single-storey wing projects from the south-east corner. This wing has two bays of large 16-pane sash windows with keystoned lintols on its west flank, and 19th-century additions on its east flank, creating a Gothic style. Extensions match the rear of the main house. The interior has not been inspected. The house became known as The Manor House in 1906 when the Whitley family inherited the lordship of the manor; the earlier manor house has not survived.
