Description

Oldway Lodge is a detached cottage with origins dating back to the 15th or 16th century, modified around 1700 and again in the 19th century. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings, topped by a thatched roof featuring plain gables and brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan and consists of two storeys with five bays, where bays three and four appear to be older than the others.

On the first floor, there are small three-light horizontal-bar casement windows, except for a blank bay two. The ground floor features larger similar casements in bays one and two with timber lintels, while bay five has a three-light hollow chamfered mullioned window set in a chamfered recess with a label. Bay four originally had a similar window, now replaced by a deeper casement. In bay three, there is a four-panel door set in a heavy frame with a timber lintel above.

There is a small single-storey garage attached to the west return flank, set back from the main structure. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to have closed and open crucks in the roof frame, which are not smoke-blackened, suggesting the presence of a former smoke hood. The layout includes a three-room cross-passage plan with a six-panel ceiling in the hall formed by deeply chamfered unstopped beams, and there may be a wattle and daub partition in the passage.
