Description

Abbey House is a detached cottage dating from around 1700, with later modifications. The exterior is constructed of ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and brick quoins to the south gable. The roof is thatched, with coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay facade. It features hollow-chamfered mullioned windows set in chamfered recesses. The first-floor windows are 4-light with labels, while the ground-floor windows are 3-light and without labels; some of the windows have iron-framed opening casements. A six-panel door with toplights, set beneath a timber hood supported on wrought-iron brackets, is located in the lower bay to the left. A single-storey extension with a half-hipped thatched roof extends from the north gable, and a loft door is located in its end gable. The south gable is plain. The interior is believed to have a three-room plan, with a staircase in the entrance hall and another attic stair alongside a large fireplace in the south gable. The roof structure includes tie-beam trusses.
