Description

Broadhembury School is a school building constructed in 1867, with later additions. It features rough-dressed coursed flint with Bathstone dressings and has a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, adorned with crested ridge tiles and a projecting stack with set-offs. The building is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style and has an irregular plan, with the main schoolroom facing north-west and a later red brick wing extending at right angles to the rear.

The school is located immediately south-west of the church and is a single-storey structure. The asymmetrical north-west front has four windows and is gabled at the right end, which includes a gabled porch on the left. The porch features a two-centred roll-moulded outer doorframe. Of the three windows on the right, two have been replaced in the 20th century, while the third is original, consisting of a single light with a stone frame and a shouldered cranked arch. In the gable at the extreme right, there is a two-light stone window with plate tracery, a quatrefoil in the head, and a trefoil ventilator above it. Adjacent to the left of the gable is a large projecting stack.

On the left return, there is a five-light plate traceried stone window in the gable end, which has a cinquefoil in the head and a quatrefoil ventilator above it, along with a date of 1867. To the left of this window, a lean-to features a chamfered Tudor arched doorway. The interior has not been inspected. The school is significant for its group value and adds to the variety of an outstanding estate village characterized by cob and thatch.
