Description
The Broadhembury Parish Memorial Cross is made of Devonshire granite and is located in a small enclosure at the road junction opposite the Drewe Arms, which is a Grade II*-listed building. It is also near several other Grade II-listed buildings in the village center. The cross is a plain Latin design that rises from a tapering pedestal, which sits on a two-stepped octagonal base.
On the front face of the pedestal, there is a dedicatory inscription that reads: 1914 – 1919/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES/ THAT OTHERS/ MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM/ LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT,/ THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN. The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the faces of the upper step, while the details of those who served in the Second World War are recorded on the south face of the pedestal. Additionally, the name of a soldier from the Boer War is noted on the front face of the lower step.
The enclosure around the cross is raised above road level and is marked by a rubble-stone wall at the rear. In front, there are low metal posts that support a spiked chain.
