Description

Churchstanton School is a school building constructed in 1879. It is made of random rubble local stone with buff brick dressings and features steeply pitched double Roman tiled roofs, overhanging eaves, shaped brackets at the gable ends, and decorative ridge tiles. The building has an L-plan layout facing east, with the schoolmaster's house located in the south wing.

The structure includes a one and a half storey wing that contains the schoolmaster's residence, a single storey school, and a lower single storey porch at the north end. The facade is divided into 1:4:1 bays, with the central two bays topped by a gable. There is a brick panel with a hoodmould in the apex, and a bellcote above. All windows have moulded mullions, and a dentil moulded brick cornice runs along the top, cutting across segmental headed windows with brick surrounds. This cornice continues as a string course on the left gable end, which features a 2-light window above and a single light and 2-light window below. To the right, there are 3-light windows, and a plank door with decorative hinges is located in the porch's end bay on the right.

This building is a good example of an unaltered parish school built in accordance with the 1870 Education Act. A board outside the school indicates that it was founded in 1850 as a church school located in the churchyard, became a board school in 1876, and the new school was opened at its current site in 1879.
