Description

The York Inn is an inn that dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with the northern end enlarged or rebuilt in the 19th century. It features roughcast over random rubble and has asbestos slate roofs, including a higher, independently roofed block to the north. The building is thought to have a two-cell gable entry with a two-cell addition to the north gable end. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical facade with two bays on each side. The left side has 20th-century two-light casements, while the right side features a four-light ovolo moulded and leaded wooden casement on the upper storey and a four-light ovolo moulded stone mullioned window with a hoodmould on the ground floor. There is also a 20th-century single-storey, one-bay addition on the right that is not of special interest. The level of the roadway has been raised, making the ground-floor windows almost at pavement level.

The interior has been extensively altered, but some original features remain. The wall dividing two rooms has been removed, although a peaked doorframe has been retained. There is a chamfered beam with step and run-out stops, and a spiral stair is said to open out of the left part of the room, featuring scroll stops on the doorframe. The upper storey is reported to show evidence of one blade of a cruck truss.
