Description
Churchinford Chapel, formerly known as the Baptist Chapel, was built in 1846 and features a bell cote added in the mid-20th century. The chapel is rendered over rubble with roughcast returns and has a slate roof along with a brick bell cote. It has a single cell and a standard plan. The exterior includes pilaster quoins, and the central bay slightly projects forward, flanked by two 2-light pointed arch wooden windows with divided tracery. The central entrance has a pointed arch opening with ribbed double doors. Above the entrance is a sundial inscribed with latitude and declination, featuring the inscription "The Heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth his handiwork," signed "JNA Blackmore fecit 1846."
Inside, the chapel has a rendered interior with a flat ceiling. There is a stained pine gallery with paired arch-head panels, which projects slightly forward and is supported by two cast iron columns. A stick stair is located in the southeast corner. The pulpit features similar panelling, with stick stairs on the returns and a stepped handrail leading up to three renewed steps. The chapel contains benches and a Mason and Hamlin American organ. The adjoining manse to the north is not of special interest due to 20th-century alterations. This chapel is part of the Newhouse Independent Baptist Church.
