Description
Middleton Barton is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of random rubble chert and features a gable end roof covered with concrete tiles and gable coping. The house has a two-room layout with a central cross passage, and it may be a remnant of a larger building. There are two outshuts at the rear, each containing stairs, one of which is a winder. The end stacks are made of stone.
The exterior has a front with a range of four windows; all first-floor windows and those beside the doorway are four-light windows, likely from the 18th century, although they lack their original leading. A rear casement window from the 18th century still retains its original leading.
The interior could not be inspected, but it is noted that the left-hand room features intersecting ceiling beams with composite moulding, possibly from the 16th century. The current occupant mentioned that there are framed ceiling beams in the first-floor rooms, which are now hidden by later ceilings; if they still exist, they would be an extremely unusual feature for rooms at this level.
