Description

Valentine's Farmhouse is a farmhouse that possibly dates back to the late 16th century. It is constructed of random rubble chert and features a gable end roof made of corrugated iron. The house has a three-room, through-passage plan, with the service end located to the right of the passage, facing southeast. It is believed to be built using jointed cruck construction, although the entire interior could not be inspected. The service end is heated by an end stack, while the hall is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage; the inner room is unheated. The stacks have brick shafts.

The farmhouse has two storeys. The front facade has a four-window range, featuring two- and three-light 19th-century casement windows. The rear of the house has only one window and includes a small wing at the back of the hall and inner room. The doorway leading to the through passage has chamfered jambs and a cranked lintel, with a planked door that has strap hinges.

The interior of the service end room was inspected and includes an axial ceiling beam with an unstopped shallow chamfer, as well as a large lintel over the fireplace that has a similar chamfer. The remainder of the house was not accessible during the survey, and it is possible that there are other noteworthy features inside. A closer inspection of the roof may indicate an earlier date for the building.
