Description
Coombes Head Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is constructed of pebbledashed random rubble and features a half-hipped thatched roof. The house has a three-room, through-passage plan, with the service end located to the right of the passage. The hall is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the hall, while the service end is heated by an internal end stack, both of which have brick shafts. The inner room is unheated, and stairs are located at the front of the service and inner rooms. The building has two storeys.
The front exterior includes first-floor two-light casement windows situated under eyebrow eaves. On the ground floor, there are four-light casement windows for the service end and hall, and a three-light casement window for the inner room. The rear, which faces the farm buildings, features three first-floor three-light casement windows under eyebrow eaves, with lean-tos concealing the inner room and service end. There is a four-light 19th-century casement window in the hall and a planked door leading to the passage.
Inside, the service end has a chamfered cross ceiling beam with hollow step stops, and a former lintel that is chamfered with run-out stops, now positioned over a window, which may have originally been a door. The end fireplace contains 19th-century carpentry. The hall features a chamfered axial ceiling beam with run-out stops at the higher end only, and there is a chamfered and unstopped axial beam in the inner room.
