Description
Coombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th or 17th century. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered, topped with a gabled-end slate roof. Originally, it had a three-room, through-passage plan, with the higher end located to the right of the passage. There is no evidence of smoke-blackening in the roof space. The right-hand external end stack heats the inner room, while an axial stack backing onto the passage heats the hall. The lower end of the farmhouse was later lengthened.
The building has two storeys throughout and features a front elevation with a five-window range and scattered fenestration. The ground floor includes two and three-light 19th-century casement windows, and there is a door to the former passage beneath a brick, glazed porch with a corrugated iron roof. Another door to the left leads into the current kitchen. The right-hand end elevation has a small single-light window positioned forward of the stack.
At the rear, there is a planked door in an 18th-century surround that faces the front entrance to the passage, along with a brick and slate lean-to featuring 20th-century fenestration. Inside, the inner room contains three axial chamfered beams with hollow step stops, and the end fireplace is also chamfered. The hall has three chamfered cross beams with step stops, and the fireplace lintel features a shallow chamfer. It is possible that screens remain beneath the current internal cross-wall surfaces.
