Description

Ponsford Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and has a plastered finish under a half-hipped and gabled-end thatch roof. Originally designed with a three-room, cross-passage layout and a parlour wing, it was later extended as a barn and converted into accommodation. The building features two axial stacks, one of which backs onto the passage, with brick shafts.

The front of the farmhouse has a five-window range, all with three-light casement windows on the first floor. Three of these windows have eight leaded panes per light, while two have stanchions in the middle light. There is a panelled door leading to the passage, along with a French window and a glazed door at the far right end. Additionally, there is a three-light and a four-light casement window, with the former having 15 leaded panes in the outer lights. The right-hand end has 20th-century barred casement windows on both floors. At the rear, there is a lean-to with 20th-century windows, and the wing has been completely refenestrated with garage and mock-Georgian doors.

Inside, the farmhouse has been significantly altered, but remnants of a chamfered plank and muntin screen have been removed from the rear of the hall to hide the stairs. There is a deep chamfered beam with step hollow stops in the hall, along with a fireplace that includes a side oven. The roof, dating from the 17th century or later, consists of seven trusses that are crossed and halved at the apex, with halved and pegged collars. The wing has a similar roof, but with a higher quality scantling.
