Description
Lower Knowle is a detached house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed from a mix of cob and stone, roughcast, and has a gabled-end slate roof. Originally, it had a three-room, cross-passage layout with a lower-end rear wing. The right-hand end stack, which was originally external, heats the lower end, while an axial stack backs onto the passage and heats the hall; both have brick shafts that are rendered. The house has two storeys and features a front elevation with a five-window range, including two- and three-light casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries, some with 20th-century leading. There is a lattice-work porch with a slate roof. The left-hand elevation has three- and four-light casement windows, along with a mid-19th-century two-light pointed window on the ground floor. The rear includes a single-storey lean-to and garage, with 19th and 20th-century windows.
Inside, the hall features two axial beams with elaborate composite moulding, which is wavy with a fillet and three rolls; the fireplace has been replaced. The inner room has mostly renewed beams but retains one original unstopped beam. The lower end room contains two cross-beams with cyma reversa mouldings, and the fireplace has chamfered stone jambs and an ovolo-moulded timber lintel. The roof structure is clean, with principals that are pegged and morticed. This building is listed primarily for its carpentry detailing from the 16th and 17th centuries.
