Description

Peterhaies is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered under a corrugated-iron roof. Originally, it was a three-room house with a through passage, featuring a higher end to the right of the passage. There are two end stacks, with the right stack being external, and an axial stack that heats the hall and backs onto the passage, all with brick shafts. The building has two storeys.

The front of the house has a four-window range, consisting of three 2-light and one 3-light casement windows on the first floor, and two 3-light and one 2-light windows on the ground floor, all from the 19th century with six panes per light. The entrance door is panelled below and glazed above, situated under a gabled timber porch supported by shaped brackets. At the rear, there are outshuts beneath a catslide roof with 19th-century windows.

Inside, the lower-end room features a large concealed end fireplace with deep cupboards on either side. The hall contains three axial beams, two of which have composite ovolo and concave moulding, while the central beam has two ovolo mouldings. There is a rough, chamfered beam in the inner room. A 17th-century newel staircase retains its original treads and risers, along with contemporary splat balusters leading to the landing. Internal plank doors and door surrounds are intact, while the roof has been replaced in the 19th century.
