Description

Steart is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century with some alterations in the 19th century. It is built of cob on a stone plinth, with the left front made of stone rubble up to the first floor level. At the time of the survey in 1984, colourwashing and plastering were in progress. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos with gable ends, featuring a massive projecting stack at the right gable end and a brick chimney at the left gable end. The original layout likely consisted of two rooms with a through or cross passage, and a stair was inserted in the passage. There is a rear outshut. The house has two storeys and a slightly asymmetrical front with three windows. A central timber doorway leads into a stair hall. The late 19th-century ground floor windows are two-light casements with six panes per light. An original 17th-century two-light timber casement above the front door was blocked in but retained its frame during the 1984 survey. The first floor features 20th-century windows on the left and right, which are casements with sills and heads at different levels, having two panes per light. The ground floor room on the right has a large fireplace with a beam that has step stops. The roof structure includes four trusses with collars that are halved and pegged; one truss has failed, and another has mortices for two tiers of threaded purlins.
