Description

Rose Cottage is a house from the 18th century located in Marhamchurch. It features whitewashed rendered cob on a stone plinth, with the left gable end rebuilt in brick and a thatched roof. The gable end chimneys are made of rendered brick. The original layout may have included two rooms and a cross passage, but the current arrangement has an entrance leading into a stair hall, with a narrow kitchen at the back of the stair. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window front with a slightly off-centre entrance. The ground floor windows are timber sashes, each with eight panes; the left window has been enlarged and is a tripartite sash window flanked by two-pane lights. On the first floor, there are three two-light timber casements, each with six panes per light. The ground floor room on the right has two cross beams and a partially blocked fireplace, which is said to conceal an earlier large fireplace. The partition walls of the stair hall are made of wide planking, with vertical planking on the stair hall side and horizontal planking in the ground floor room to the left. The principals are visible in the first floor rooms, and the timbers in the roof are said to be pegged. The cottage is situated in an important location close to the church in the village.
