Description

Barton Cottages is a house that was once two cottages, dating from the late 17th century to the 18th century, with 19th-century alterations and additions. The main structure features whitewashed plastered cob and a thatched roof, with brick chimneys at the gable ends. The right gable end has 19th-century additions with slate roofs, while the rear left addition is made of stone and also has a slate roof. The original layout likely included two or three rooms with a cross passage. The current layout has an early 18th-century staircase in the passage, but the rear corridor behind the stair is missing, and there is a ground floor room to the right of the passage. The right end of the house has been altered or added to in the 19th century, including a single-storey addition under a slate roof. The rear left addition creates an L shape. The house is two stories high and nearly symmetrical, featuring a five-window range with a central enclosed porch that has a sloping slate roof. On the ground floor, there are two timber two-light casements with ten panes each to the left of the porch, a small six-pane window to the right of the porch, and another two-light timber casement with ten panes to the right. The first floor has five similar timber casements. The ground floor room on the left includes a large fireplace with a fireplace beam and a cloam oven, along with hewn ceiling beams. The ground floor room to the right of the passage has ceiling beams and a boxed-in oak stair made of large planks. The roof timbers are halved and pegged. The building has group value with the Church of St Swithin.
