Description

Howards Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the early 19th century or earlier. It is rendered and plastered, topped with a slate roof that has gabled ends on the main range and a hipped roof at the ends of the south wing. The main range roof is cement washed and features end stacks, while the wing also has end stacks.

The building has a T-plan layout, with the east wing forming a cross wing at right angles to the main range, which is single depth with heated rooms on either side of a central entrance. There is a 20th-century two-storey lean-to addition at the rear. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front elevation facing south, featuring a sloping slated porch supported by posts. The fenestration, dating from around the early 19th century, is intact, with tripartite sashes with small panes on the ground floor and three 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The east elevation of the wing is slightly asymmetrical, with regular fenestration, including a front door located to the left of centre, which is sheltered by a gabled porch canopy and features a panelled front door. There are three first floor 12-pane sashes, and a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor to the right. Small single-storey lean-tos are attached to the front on both the left and right sides.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to be very unaltered and likely contains features of interest. Howards Farmhouse is a good example of an unusually unaltered farmhouse, with its early 19th-century fenestration remaining intact.
