Description

These are two cottages, formerly known as Catsbridge Cottages, likely dating from the 17th century. The walls are cob, with a colourwashed and plastered finish, and the roof is thatched with gables at each end. A rendered stack with a brick shaft sits at the left gable, and there are brick chimneys at the ridge and right gable. The building was originally planned with a single depth, probably featuring a three-room cross or through-passage layout, incorporating a kitchen to the left, a hallstack backing onto a cross passage, and a heated parlour to the right. The front facade curves slightly at the street corner. It is a two-storey building with a long, asymmetrical three-window range, with entrances now located at the rear. The ground floor window on the left is small and wide, dating from the 19th century and featuring eight panes without horns. There are five other irregularly spaced ground floor windows. The first floor window on the left is a sash window matching the ground floor window, also without horns. Two other first floor windows are 20th-century casements with three panes per light, and the thatch is styled as a brow over these windows. Number 1 cottage has sawn ceiling beams in the ground floor room on the left, and it is believed to have some pegged roof trusses.
