Description

Birwood House is a house with origins possibly dating to the 18th century or earlier. It is colourwashed and rendered, with an asbestos slate roof gabled at the left end and a brick chimney on the ridge. The windows have plain, black-painted architraves. The house is two storeys high and has a five-window front. A central 19th-century six-panel front door sits slightly off-centre. The ground floor windows include a 16-pane hornless sash on the left, a tripartite sash to the right of the door with a 12-pane central light and four-pane outer lights, a 16-pane hornless sash one from the right, and a six-pane fixed window on the right. The first floor has a 2-light casement on the left and four further 16-pane hornless sashes. Some crown glass is present in the windows. A collection of original late 18th and early 19th century sash windows are intact; the first floor right-hand sash, on the corner, has a hornless sash on its return. A single light is present on the return wall of the right-hand first floor sash, and the set-back position of this part within the render indicates it is framed.
