Description

This building, known as No. 3 Corner Gardens, is a house with origins dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from whitewashed and rendered cob with a slate roof that has gables at both ends, and features a rendered projecting stack at the right gable end. The original layout was likely a three-room plan with a through passage, although the inner room has been rebuilt and is now a separate property.

The house is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. There is an off-centre 20th-century door beneath a rectangular fanlight, and an additional entrance on the left side of the front. To the right of the front door, there is an 8-pane horned 19th-century sash window. At the rear, there is a window that was formerly the rear door of the through passage, which retains its timber lintel.

Inside, the floor level of the left-hand room has been raised. The timber lintel above the doorway on the front left is chamfered and features wide run-out stops. There is a jointed shouldered arched timber doorway in the ground floor room at the rear wall, and a similar doorway in the right gable wall on the first floor. The roof trusses are raised crucks that were originally fitted with threaded purlins and a diagonally-set ridge, and feature a cambered collar that is mortised into the principals.

Please note that there are three properties with the address of No. 3 Corner Gardens, and this particular property faces south. The owner is Mr. Miller.
