Description

Thorne Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, which was remodelled and extended in the mid-19th century. The building is roughcast, likely constructed from stone rubble, and features a slate roof that is gabled at the right end and hipped at the left end, with a gabled rear wing. It has right end stacks, an axial stack, and an end stack to the wing. The main range faces south and is arranged in a three-room layout with a through passage, which is unusual for the region as the axial hall stack is positioned on the wall opposite the passage. A rear left wing, which is probably a 19th-century addition, is situated at right angles to the inner room on the left end. The main entrance to the house is now located in the wing, leading into a stair hall.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window south front with regular fenestration. There is a doorway to the right of centre that leads into the former cross or through passage, which is covered by a flat porch canopy. The windows are 16-pane sash windows with horns, likely dating from the mid or late 19th century, except for a small two-light casement located above the front door. The wing facing the road features three-light small pane timber casements and a front door to the right of centre, also with a flat porch canopy.

While the interior has not been thoroughly inspected, the ground floor room to the right of the main range contains a re-used 17th-century moulded half beam, a chamfered cross beam, and a partly-blocked fireplace with a timber lintel. A stair has been inserted into the passage. This large and attractive farmhouse may have earlier features that are concealed behind modern plaster.
