Description

Coombeland Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 17th century, which was remodelled and extended around the mid-19th century. It features whitewashed and rendered walls with slate roofs that are hipped at the ends. The right-hand block has a projecting front lateral stack with a brick shaft and a projecting left end stack, while there is an axial stack on the left-hand block. The farmhouse consists of two adjoining single-depth blocks, with the left-hand block set forward. The right-hand block, originating from the 17th century, contains two heated rooms, one on either side of a straight stair facing the entrance, with the right-hand room heated by the lateral stack. A small store room adjoins the right end. The left-hand block, built in the 19th century, is also two rooms wide with a central entrance.

The exterior is two storeys high, featuring a symmetrical three-by-three window front with panelled front doors for each block. The windows are attractive, with regular fenestration of 19th-century small pane timber casements. Inside, the right-hand room of the right-hand block has a possibly re-set 17th-century axial beam with narrow chamfers and scroll-stops, along with a large open fireplace that has stone rubble jambs and a replaced lintel. The left-hand room contains a narrow-chamfered scroll-stopped cross beam and a 19th-century chimneypiece. The left-hand block features 19th-century details, including a chimneypiece and grate. The farmhouse is charming, with an exterior that is visually appealing and an interior that remains largely unspoiled.
