Description

Higher Withleigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century, which was remodeled in the mid-19th century. It features rendered cob walls and a dry slate roof, with brick end stacks and a former lateral stack that projects from the rear roof slope. The building has cast-iron ogee gutters. Originally, it had a three-room layout with a probable through-passage plan, which was extended at the rear in the 19th century, and the roof was remodeled to accommodate these extensions, along with later 19th-century dairy lean-tos at the back.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a slightly irregular four-window range. The first floor has early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows, while the ground floor features a similar tripartite sash window on the right. The other two ground-floor windows were replaced in the mid to late 20th century but remain in their original openings. The central window, which serves the hall, is very wide but has been reduced from its original width. There is a doorway with an old panelled and glazed door towards the left and another doorway with a 20th-century door that is central to the fenestration on the right.

Inside, the farmhouse has a large 17th-century hall fireplace, which has a later fireplace built within it at the rear of the room. There is a 17th-century axial beam with run-out stops, and the hall also contains some 19th-century panelled doors and a 19th-century king-post roof structure.
