Description

Wayland Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with an extension or rebuilding that occurred in the late 19th century. The building features rendered cob walls, with brick used for the extension, and has a dry slate roof. It includes two brick axial stacks and a lateral brick stack at the rear of the extension. The layout consists of a two-room plan with a central entrance and stair hall, modified around a lobby entry, and a later lean-to on the right side, along with a late 19th-century one-room-plan addition or rebuild on the left.

The exterior stands at two storeys and has a window range of 1:4. The original four-window range includes mid-19th-century or reproduction casements with two, three, and four lights, all featuring glazing bars. There is a doorway to the left of centre with a four-panel door, another doorway on the right side of the original part, and a doorway leading to the lean-to.

Inside, the farmhouse has a late 17th-century chamfered crossbeam in the hall, and a plain cross-beam of possibly similar date in the room to the right of the entrance hall. This room features a fireplace with a 17th-century plan form, although it has been lined with stone in the late 20th century. The early 19th-century staircase is also present. The roof structure was not inspected in detail, but the plain feet of probable original trusses are visible resting on the tops of the walls.
